With its very richly branched and relatively deep-penetrating root system, it enmeshes the soil, absorbs and binds its residual nitrogen content, preventing nutrient leaching.
It can be fed green and ensiled, it can be grazed.
Its grain yield is similar to oats, the smaller the grains and the darker the colour of the fodder.
